Artist Statement

"In collaboration with PangeaSeed Foundation, I illustrated threats to oceanic ecosystems through portraits of contemporary female marine biologists. By representing these women in connection with the environments they love, I have portrayed the spirit of the ocean as challenged, yet resilient- and ultimately as the source of all life.

The second print in this series, Biodiversity Loss, features the marine biologist and first Black woman science TV host, Danni Washington. While planning this illustration, I spoke with Danni about threatened ocean species that are close to her heart, like the Staghorn and Elkhorn coral that form her hair in this image.

Coral reefs are home to diverse marine species, and they are "bleaching" at an alarming rate due to stressors from climate change like warming waters and erosion. Danni explains that solving these climate-induced issues means advocating for diversity both in the ocean and within our society.

In Danni's words, 'By committing to our own personal and collective healing, we will simultaneously heal our relationship with nature. If we want to protect biodiversity under the waves and on the land, then humans who choose to serve as nature's guardians must also consciously decide to reflect an inclusive tapestry amongst ourselves. Each one of us has an important role to play in this movement."
