Marine Iguana by Simon Pearce

"El portal de Itzamná" highlights Galápagos marine iguana, a lizard species endemic to the Galápagos Islands, classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Galápagos Iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) are the world’s only oceangoing lizard. They are also only found in the Galápagos, where they can be seen resting on the rocky shores in the Galápagos National Park and National Marine Reserve; Galápagos Islands Man and Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO); and Galápagos Islands World Heritage Site.

However, introduced species such as cats, rats, dogs and pigs prey on marine iguanas. They are also threatened by the impacts of climate change as sea level and air temperature rise can affect their beach nesting habitat and the iguanas’ ability to regulate its body temperature while on land, as well as interfere with egg development.

This species is completely protected by national legislation (Ecuador) under "Special Law" in the Galápagos, and is listed on CITES Appendix II.

Artist Statement

"I chose the marine iguana that clearly stands out as the only lizard on our planet with the ability to live under water and it has so many characteristics that make it unique in the world. This is the main reason I chose it; to make a tribute and aim to raise awareness about its beauty and seek for the preservation of the marine iguana, along with all other marine species.
Doing some research about the ancient symbolism of the marine iguana, I stumbled upon the “Itzamná” (Maya) which symbolizes the lizard in the Dresden codex and is very popular in the Yucatecan Mayan culture and it means “Iguana's House.” Itzamná has been identified as “Celestial Monster” in the Mayan art. Thus our contemporary version of this god symbolizes, in this illustration, the rebirth of this animal, which protects us and guides us to find our balance with nature and especially with the oceans and our spirit."

Artist Bio

Using traditional imagery from his own cultural heritage, sometimes mixing it up with the ones from the countries he visits, Mexican street artist, illustrator and graphic designer Saner creates a distinctive vision of the world. His masked characters appear on walls, canvases, paper or found objects revealing the influence of Mexican customs and folklore. With the intense mystery touch and weird sense of humor, his local demons and heroes are relayed to present time. Posing the images on different surfaces, Saner questions modern society encouraging the viewer towards a mindset of oneness, as opposed to otherness.
