"In relation to the theme of the loss of marine biodiversity, I had to learn what coral bleaching really was, why it happens, and how it affects the ecosystems around it. I learned that the colors in coral come from algae, and when the water temperature rises over a period of time, the algae drift away from the coral and can’t regenerate, causing the bleaching effect. In turn, the lack of algae harms the coral, which harms other creatures living in the reefs.
I chose the depict a sea lion as a guardian of its reef, watching sadly as the color from its reefs slowly drifts away toward the glowing red hot water. The color fades from the sea lion and the surrounding garden eels (my favorite animal at the aquarium). I’d like to depict the corals in neons to nod to their bioluminescent qualities and to create a stark contrast from the white of the “bleached” parts. Depicting animals is a running theme in my work as an artist, and I’m hoping I’ve captured this theme in a way that will communicate this effect of climate change to viewers."
