The Story Behind

William and the Seabirds

When creating this artwork, I wanted to showcase the vital role that seabirds play in the balance and health of marine ecosystems. They are amazing indicators of ocean health, and act as predators, prey, nutrient vectors, and so much more. Their role in regulating prey populations and transporting nutrients from the sea to land is crucial for both marine and land environments. I chose to showcase them alongside a deep sea creature, the giant squid, in the hopes of highlighting the connection that they play in the lives of even deep sea inhibitors. Seabird populations are facing significant threats, which highlights the need for conservation efforts more than ever before. It has been a privilege to grow up in a place that had an abundance of seabirds, and I hope that they will still be here for future generations.

About the Artist

Juliet Schreckinger

Juliet Schreckinger is a Long Island, NY based artist. Her work is created using a stippling technique in pen & ink and graphite. Juliet’s pieces are inspired by the ocean, nature, and all of the creatures within our world. Since the time she was a child, Juliet has been fascinated by black and white photography, colorless television shows, and film noir movies. Being exposed to the lighting effects and sharp contrasts shown in these photographs and films greatly inspired the type of work that she does today. Juliet’s work is centered around giving a voice to nature and animals, with the goal of showcasing their importance in this world. Through an illustrative take on fine art, she strives to express a story in each drawing.
