Steller Sea Lion by Jim Clark
Photograph by Jim Clark
"Little Biome" highlights the Steller sea lion classified as near threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) inhabits northern Pacific coasts from California to Japan, and are the largest of all sea lions. These giant pinnipeds hunt fish, squid, octopus and, rarely, smaller seals. Most Steller sea lion populations declined markedly in the 1980s and 1990s, even though the animals are protected. They have attracted considerable attention in recent decades due to significant, unexplained declines in their numbers over a large portion of their range in Alaska.

Artist Statement
"I’ve always enjoyed the playfulness of sea lions and their entrancing grace of movement underwater. I decided to call this painting 'Little Biome', its circular shape reflects the Earth's shape as well as the circular nature of life. When painting this, I thought about our effect on the ocean and the great responsibility we have to prevent further damage. The girl has a sphere floating above her hands which represent the delicate ecosystem of the ocean and our awareness of the power to destroy or protect it."
