Habitat of the Month:
Seagrass Beds

Seagrass is a flowering plant that lives in a marine or brackish environment. There are about 50 species of true seagrasses worldwide.

Seagrasses are found in protected coastal waters such as bays, lagoons, and estuaries and in both temperate and tropical regions. Seagrasses attach to the ocean bottom by thick roots and rhizomes, horizontal stems with shoots pointing upward and roots pointing downward. Their roots help stabilize the ocean bottom.

Seagrasses provide an important habitat to a number of organisms. Some use seagrass beds as nursery areas, others seek shelter there their whole lives. Larger animals such as manatees and sea turtles feed on animals that live in the seagrass beds.

New research estimates that the world’s seagrass meadows store 20 billion metric tons of carbon, even though the threatened marine ecosystems make up only 0.2% of Earth’s surface.

You can help save seagrass habitats

  1. Donate to organizations working to raise awareness and research such as PangeaSeed, the IUCN and Conservation International.

  2. Advocate stronger global and regional action to protect seagrass bed habitats and the animals that call them Home.

  3. Support the establishment and protection of marine protected areas (MPAs).

  4. Recommend sustainable ecotourism and dive/snorkel on seagrass beds.

  5. Think twice before you buy.  Do not support the trade of endangered ocean animal products and try to reduce your carbon footprint.

  6. Educate yourself, friend and family on the issues facing seagrass bed habitats and other threatened marine habitats. Act NOW if we wish to save our seas.

About the Artist

James Flames

James Flames is a storyteller who uses illustration and print-making to share tales of discovery and exploration, one image at a time. From his illustrations, he creates limited edition screen prints, which he hand-pulls, and they go out into the world as official rock posters, licensed movie posters, gallery pieces, and private releases.

James honed his skills in his hometown of Brooklyn, NY before moving to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC, where he currently works and resides. He creates rock posters for some of today’s biggest touring bands and musicians, including Billy Joel, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, and Widespread Panic. And his artwork has been featured in galleries all over the world, as well as on officially licensed movie posters, album covers, beer bottle labels, magazines, comic books and, well, you get the idea. He creates everything by hand in his studio tucked away in the woods.
