The Story Behind

Cephalopodic Melodies

Not only did I have the incredible opportunity to Co-Direct the first Sea Walls Mural Festival in the San Francisco Bay: Sea Walls Emeryville, but I also had the honor of creating this poster for Bay Area legend: Tommy Guerrero!

Just as an octopus gracefully navigates the depths of the ocean with its fluid movements, Tommy Guerrero's music effortlessly flows, creating a unique sonic experience. His guitar playing mirrors the movements of an octopus navigating the ocean's depths. Just as an octopus uses its many tentacles to explore and interact with its environment, Tommy's fingers effortlessly dance across the strings: writhing, twisting, and unfurling intricate melodies and harmonies. His music, like the octopus, possesses a fluidity and adaptability that transcends genres, enveloping us in a mesmerizing embrace of sound and emotion.

I hope this poster also serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect the remarkable creatures of the deep, including the octopus. These highly intelligent beings, capable of problem-solving, learning, and creativity, play a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. Sadly, their habitats face numerous threats, from overfishing to habitat destruction. We must strive to protect these extraordinary creatures, recognizing that their survival is crucial for the health of our oceans and the preservation of the Earth's rich biodiversity.

About the Artist

Joey Rose

Born in the San Francisco Bay Area and raised in a small town, Latrobe, CA filled with golden rolling hills but devoid of street art, Joey Rose found his passion for public art upon moving back to Oakland as a student at California College of the Arts. During his last few years at CCA, he gained construction experience: installing living walls with Habitat Horticulture. He obtained a C-33 Painting Contractors license shortly after graduating with a BFA in Illustration in 2017. He combines his technical know-how with his art practice to paint meaningful, site-specific murals that last.

Joey is also an accomplished community organizer. Since 2019, he has worked with the non-profit Pangeaseed Foundation as an artist in Maui, an operational team member in Santa Cruz, and in 2022 as Co-Director and Producer of Sea Walls Emeryville, a mural festival consisting of 17 artists from around the world painting 15 ocean-focused murals spread across the city.
