This special edition is the first of four designs in the "Protect What You Love" series created in collaboration with Eric Vozzola. A new print in the series will be released quarterly over the course of 2018.

"Protect What You Love - The Reef" highlights coral reefs, the rainforests of the sea. While coral reefs cover less than 1% of Earth's surface, they provide a sheltered home to about 25% of marine fish species. However, in the past 50 years, the health of the world's reefs has declined significantly due to human-induced changes such as rising sea temperatures and increasingly acidic waters. It is estimated that 58% of the world's coral reefs are potentially threatened by human activity and that more than 80% of the world's shallow reefs are severely over-fished. 

Artist Statement

"The coral reefs embody two elements that are most special to me from the natural world that become recurring threads in my work: vibrant color and diversity of life. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, I find similarities between the contrasting ecosystems of the dry and arid desert vs the lush rainforests of the sea. Growing up, I was obsessed with nature documentaries – primarily anything related to the ocean. At that age, the vibrancy and mystery of the ocean absolutely captivated me and still does. Some of my earliest memories of drawing and painting were of ocean life or coral scenes, so my connection to the water reaches far beyond my landlocked locale. Coincidentally, I finally met the good folks of PangeaSeed after following their cause for a couple years, almost randomly in the desert, and instantly felt a serendipitous connection with their mission. I’m all about balance in my life, so investing my concerns to the ocean only seems right to me, because the way I see it: without the ocean, there would be no desert. Furthermore, the effects of human-induced impact and climate change on our environment, particularly the coral reefs, must have attention and action brought to it – so I use my art, in this case, to further connect with, and help raise conservation awareness of the fragile coral reef ecosystems."

Artist Bio

 Eric Vozzola

Eric is a fine artist, muralist, and graphic designer based out of Las Vegas, NV. He received his BFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has shown work nationally and locally, including three solo exhibitions in his hometown, as well as having created multiple public art pieces around the Las Vegas valley – all alongside working as an in-house and freelance graphic designer. In his studio work, Eric often focuses on geometry, color, and landscapes as his subject matters of choice in achieving his ultimate goal of building bridges between art, design, and environment. This combination of organic forms and textures balanced with geometric and design-heavy elements, run rampant throughout his work. The content of his work is fueled by his desert environment – from mountain-scaped horizons, organic life forms, and vibrant colors found in the some of the most stunning sunsets in the Southwest. Eric believes his work impacts his audience by allowing for a visual arena to truly feel the vibrant colors he uses and to provide the mind with illusions of familiar, yet distant environments to transcend into deeper thought processes. Some of his recent notable projects include a third career solo exhibit currently at the Whitney Library Gallery in Las Vegas, collaborating on an immersive video room installation for Life Is Beautiful Festival in September 2017, and contributing local environmentally-focused murals to the Clark County ZAP!9 utility box public art project in May 2017.

About the Artist

Eric Vozzola

Eric Vozzola is a studio artist, muralist, and graphic designer based in his hometown of Las Vegas, NV. He received his BFA in Graphic Design from UNLV in 2011. Eric has shown studio work in solo and group shows locally and nationally, and has multiple public artworks around Vegas. His most notable solo shows in Las Vegas were held at Winchester Gallery, Whitney Library Gallery, and the Alumni Gallery at his alma mater of UNLV. He has created murals and public art for Resorts World, Circa Resort & Casino, DTP Companies (formerly Downtown Project), the City of Las Vegas, the City of Henderson, Life Is Beautiful festival, Meow Wolf at Area 15, and various private residences and local businesses. Eric held a near decade long day-job design career alongside his fine art and mural practice, but quit the day-job in early 2019 to pursue his thriving art career full-time, and turn it into a family business with his wife, Kira, and their sons, Sage and Oren.

Eric Vozzola’s ultimate goal with his artwork is to find symbiotic relationships between art and design, emoting feelings of balance with the natural and digital worlds, and offering dynamic universes full of wonder, mindfulness, and joy to his audience. Eric is known for his use of vibrant color palettes and nods to his surrounding desert environment within his work. Eric traverses a variety of media and visual motifs, working with painting, drawing, digital media, and installation. The range of Eric’s visual language combines the use of abstract patterns, textures, and intersections of color, with surreal skyscapes, realistic natural elements, and expressive land formations. Vozzola draws his inspiration from every facet of his life, including his graphic design and studio art backgrounds, growing up in the desert, travel, his family, the fragility of nature and protection of the environment, psychedelia and full spectrum color, colors and patterns found in nature, geometry and optical art, live music, looking to the sky and cosmos, art history, and the love of life.
