In early 2011, Fintan Magee’s home city of Brisbane, Australia was hit with the worst flood in decades. During the disaster, 20,000 homes were damaged and 32 people were killed with the cost to the economy of the region at $10 billion. With extreme weather events becoming more and more common in the region many scientists have linked the severity of the floods to the ongoing issue of climate change. This painting depicts two of the artist’s school friends who were affected by the flooding. The artist aims to use personal experience and stories to talk about broader issues relating to climate change and the environment.

About the Artist

Fintan Magee

Fintan Magee, born in 1985 in Lismore, New South Wales, is a Sydney-based social realist painter renowned for his large-scale murals. With a background influenced by his architect mother and sculptor father, Magee began drawing at a young age and has since created murals that inhabit cities worldwide, from London to Buenos Aires. His politically charged artworks, inspired by his exposure to Northern Ireland's murals, blend journalistic elements with public art, exploring themes such as migration, environmental issues, and social change. Known for their sentimentality and integration with urban environments, Magee's works draw from personal experiences and the mundane, often reflecting the aesthetics of children's books and the Low Brow art movement. Recognized as one of Australia's leading public artists, he has exhibited internationally, with notable solo exhibitions like 'Big Dry' in Los Angeles and 'Waves' in Paris, and has been featured in major publications including Juxtapoz Magazine and the Sydney Morning Herald.
