The Story Behind

Bait Ice Beer

My work often explores contrast and contradiction, especially through wildlife and the natural world. I’m drawn to placing animals in unexpected relationships and environments, creating surreal moments that challenge our assumptions about where things belong. A shark beside a deer, for example, becomes more than an image. It invites us to reconsider boundaries, connection, and the fragile balance between worlds.

This piece is also deeply personal. It marks the first time I’ve painted my best friend, my constant companion, and my partner in life, Winston. We shared everything, every day. Losing him has changed me, and creating this work has been a way to hold onto that bond.

Winston forever ❤️

About the Artist

Chris Austin

Chris Austin is a painter based in Toronto, Canada. His work utilizes a surrealist vision of the natural world to tell stories about significant encounters and incidents. A figure in a yellow rain slicker stands in for the viewer in several works, bearing witness to levitating sharks and marine life as they move through our world. The inexplicable nature of these scenes draws us into a world out of kilter, it's central figures displaced, and asks us to reflect on our own assumptions about the natural world.

Priority Ocean Challenge

Several issues are at play. The challenges confronting our oceans are intertwined and overlapping, which makes them even more difficult to address and places additional strain on marine species and habitats.
