The Story Behind

Umi

In Umi, Scott Listfield imagines a surreal future shaped by rising seas, where an octopus has made a home among the remnants of human civilization. The scene explores climate change, sea-level rise, and the possibility of a new relationship between human life and the ocean.

I make paintings that are about the future. And the future for many of us will include rising tides and a world where the seas and the life within them start to intersect with our own day to day lives. Where you might have an unexpected moment with an octopus. Where the tides wash over the remnants of our civilization and make them part of their world, and yet still, hauntingly, part of ours. I made this painting originally for a Pangeaseed show in Japan, and I titled it Umi, meaning ocean. It was meant to envision a future where maybe we've made some sort of peace between the rising seas and our own life. Where we live in a world where an octopus might make home in a place we once made for ourselves, but maybe that is ok.

About the Artist

Scott Listfield

Scott Listfield is known for his paintings featuring a lone exploratory astronaut lost in a landscape cluttered with pop culture icons, corporate logos, and tongue-in-cheek science fiction references. Scott grew up in Boston and studied art at Dartmouth College. After some time spent living abroad, Scott returned to America and, after watching 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time, began painting astronauts and, sometimes, dinosaurs. He now lives and works in Los Angeles.

Scott regularly exhibits his work in galleries and museums around the world. His paintings have been profiled in Juxtapoz, Wired Magazine, and The Boston Globe, and in 2018 the first book on his work was published by Paragon Books.

Priority Ocean Challenge

Ocean x Climate

Impacts of climate change on our oceans, such as rising sea temperatures and acidification, devastate fragile coral reef ecosystems and disrupt sensitive processes that regulate the global climate.
