Artist Statement
"Last year, I had the privilege of creating a mural for PangeaSeed Foundation's Sea Walls Santa Cruz public art project alongside the Save Our Seas Foundation, which is a nonprofit focused on ocean conservation, and particularly shark protection. Working with Save Our Seas, I learned that, on average, sharks are responsible for less than 10 human deaths a year, whereas humans kill over 100 million sharks every year.
Sharks have been portrayed in our culture as man-eating beasts that are out to get us, when, in fact, they are just like any other animal on the planet, and their role in the ocean ecosystem is extremely important. I created a mural that took the shark out of the cold dark environment that we are used to seeing it in, and placed it in surroundings that feel more familiar to us. The California Poppy is iconic to the west coast and made for a fun backdrop to portray our friends with fins.
I was thrilled to create a print to serve as a companion piece for my Santa Cruz mural. Removing the boundaries that separate us, I hope to show that we are all part of a larger ecosystem. Our success as a species depends on the well-being of our oceans , and healthy oceans need healthy shark populations."
About the Artist
The goal of David’s work is to create environments that exist beyond the parameters of our physical world. His style blurs the boundaries between what should and shouldn’t exist together by bringing subjects into surroundings that they wouldn’t normally interact with. These scenes are often combined with graphic colors and patterns in an effort to provide harmony and balance to the opposing forces. His aim is to create new relationships between the subjects and the viewer.
