Artist Statement

Wherever there is fishing, there is bycatch. A massive amount of marine life is mistakingly entangled in fishing nets, where they are drowned to death or die of starvation. I wanted to create a piece of art that visually highlights the shocking realities of commercial fishing and the lives lost from it.

Francesca Page

Artist Bio

Francesca Page is a British award-winning Photographer, Fine Art Painter, Scientific Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Dive Professional, and writer passionate about using her creative skills to create change. She seeks to raise awareness through the power of creativity, documenting the human damage to our natural world. Whilst also highlighting the beauty, wonder, and magic that can be found above and below the waves. She believes in the power of connection and empathy that art can bring to the viewer. She goes with the mindset of if you love something, you will do anything to protect it.

Francesca graduated with a BA Honours in Illustration at Camberwell College of the Arts London, UAL in 2017. In her last years of study, she wrote her dissertation on how visual communication can help environmental issues in the age of the Anthropocene, and this is where her love for Activism and using her skills to create change was born. She creates large-scale watercolor paintings of wildlife interacting with their environment based on her own encounters and photographs. She hopes her work allows you to experience some of the wildest places on the planet and the most incredible creatures she has fallen in love with from the comfort of a gallery, your home, or wherever you view her art. Her obsession with color theory, movement, immense detail, and pushing her medium’s boundaries is what indulgences her artwork. Over the years of experimenting, she has developed her own handmade watercolor paint that is vivid in color by day and glows by night. Creating an interactive and magical element in her paintings.

Francesca's work has been featured in Oceanographic and Dive Magazine UK as well as being the winner of the Nature Category in the National Geographic Traveller Photography Competition 2020. She illustrated the animations for the Documentary Seaspiracy on Netflix, is the named finalist for the young initiative category for the Ocean Awards 2023, and has worked with some amazing organizations and brands over the years. Francesca is a Free diver and Open Water dive Instructor with work experience in the diving industry as well as over 250 logged dives. She worked the season as a freelance underwater Photographer on the Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, and is now currently based in Sydney, Australia.
