"Depth & Abyss" by Sabek highlights the negative impact of destructive fishing practices such as longlining, purse seines, and lingering ghost nets.

Artist Statement

"The artwork portrays destructive fishing practices (overfishing), and how it affects the ocean and everything that inhabits it. I painted the humpback whale as the main character because I wanted to represent how it is vanishing, like everything around it. There is only one trail, a shadow of what it was. The concept aims to touch upon not only overfishing but above all, how we interact with the environment; disrespectfully and abusively. There's still a lot to learn and value about the sea before it's too late. If it isn't already..."

About the Artist

Sabek

Sabek (Madrid, 1985) began his artistic journey in the early 2000s by intervening in the streets and abandoned places around Madrid, where he developed his unique graffiti style. Over time, he evolved to produce more figurative work, experimenting with various techniques and mediums beyond walls. His unmistakable style, characterized by silhouettes inspired by nature and powerful animals, reflects a deep contemplation of humanity’s relationship with primal instincts. Sabek’s art evokes a profound sense of respect and awe, drawing from the nobility and strength of the animal kingdom.

Sabek’s large-scale murals can be seen around the world, including in the USA, France, Spain, Malaysia, Russia, and New Zealand. His work is distinguished by a harmonious blend of subtlety and power, featuring shapes and masses of flat colors that coexist seamlessly with intricate details. His minimalist representations of animals intertwine with plant forms and human figures, creating allegories of natural balance and energy. Sabek’s compositions transcend conventional symbolism, forging new realities rather than merely reflecting them. His artwork is also exhibited in galleries in Spain, France, and the United States, showcasing his distinctive approach to contemporary art.
