Artist Statement
"The ocean is essential to all forms of life. I often depict women in my work as ocean deities who serve as the goddesses and protectors of the seas. This particular piece was inspired by the imagery of Our Lady of Sorrows, depicted in her mournful state. The arrangement of bleached coral frames her face, similar to the way her cloak would. Iridescent, pearl-like tears stream down her face as she weeps in response to the human activity that directly contributes to climate change and its rapid impact on our oceans.
Coral reefs, known as the “rainforests of the sea,” are home to nearly a quarter of all marine life. Between the continuous absorption of CO2 emissions and the increasing acidity levels contributing to the warming of our oceans, coral reefs are bleaching and dying off at an alarming rate. At this continued pace, this crisis threatens the very existence of oceanic ecosystems and has a direct reflection on human resources."

Artist Bio
Born and raised in Miami, Tatiana Suarez’ work draws you into a surreal, creamy, and ethereal world filled with doe-eyed figures ornamented by unsettling accompaniments and sexual undertones. On both canvas and walls, Suarez’ work is rich with symbols from her Brazilian and El Salvadorian heritage, juxtaposing the beautiful with the exotic and creepy to create enchanted narratives. The natural mythology and folklore from her respective parent cultures influence her work, from the indigenous face paint and adornment used, to the vibrant and tropical color palettes of the South American landscape.
