Endemic to Antarctica, emperor penguins are the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species. As the only penguin to breed on sea ice and remain in Antarctica through the winter, it is one of the most ice-dependent of all penguin species, requiring sea ice for foraging, breeding, and raising its young. Due to the impacts of global climate change, scientists estimate that their population may decrease by 33% by the end of this century. For this reason, they are classified as near-threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
