Max Dalton is a graphic artist living in Buenos Aires, Argentina by way of Barcelona, New York and Paris. He has been drawing since he was two or three, and began to take it seriously around the age of thirteen. Habitat of the Month:
Southern Ocean

The Antarctic is the highest, driest, windiest, emptiest, coldest place on earth. With an ice sheet covering all but 2.4 percent of Antarctic’s 14 million square kilometers, at its thickest point the ice sheet is 4,776 meters deep and averages 2, 160 meters thick. The Antarctic is home to 90 percent of all the world’s ice and it is 70 percent of all the world’s fresh water.

This extreme habitat is home to a wide variety of seafaring animals – some of which only exist in these harsh conditions. Killer whales, emperor penguins, leopard seals and krill (which is considered the most important and the basis of the Antarctic food chain) are among the many who call this frozen habitat “Home”.

Offshore drilling, unregulated commercial fishing and global warming are some of the most pressing threats to this critical habitat.

You can help save Southern Ocean habitats

  1. Donate to organizations working to raise awareness and research such as PangeaSeed,  the Antarctic Oceans Alliance, and Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition.

  2. Advocate stronger global and regional action to protect Southern Ocean habitats and the animals that call them Home.

  3. Support the establishment and protection of marine protected areas (MPAs).

  4. Recommend sustainable, responsible tourism.

  5. Think twice before you buy.  Do not support the trade of endangered ocean animal products and try to reduce your carbon footprint.

  6. Educate yourself, friend and family on the issues facing Southern Ocean habitats and other threatened marine habitats. Act NOW if we wish to save our seas.
