Endemic to Antarctica, emperor penguins are the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species. As the only penguin to breed on sea ice and remain in Antarctica through the winter, it is one of the most ice-dependent of all penguin species, requiring sea ice for foraging, breeding, and raising its young. Due to the impacts of global climate change, scientists estimate that their population may decrease by 33% by the end of this century. For this reason, they are classified as near-threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Artist Statement
"The Emperor penguin is a symbol of strength, determination and most importantly love. For these reasons, I chose to create an artwork that highlights their beauty and our responsibility to protect them from extinction. It's our daily actions that will determine the fate of iconic marine animals like the Emperor penguin and we must work together to help conserve these animals for generations to come." - Ilya Kuvshinov
