Artist Statement

"Home to over 25,000 different oceanic species, Australia’s highly diverse ocean habitats are rapidly changing. Five of the known endemic species that are quickly disappearing from Australian waters include the Maugean skate, the Giant creeper, the Red handfish, the Brown-lined sea snake, and the Giant kelp. Due to rising sea temperatures and ocean acidity, these species face certain extinction.

In Australia, the term “Sea Change” refers to a significant change in lifestyle, more often a move from the city to a rural seaside location. The term is often seen as positive - however, is juxtaposed when placed in the context of current dramatic climate changes paired with declining oceanic populations.

I wanted to capture the beauty of these sea creatures while highlighting the importance of our own actions in preventing further deterioration to ocean habitats. This work seeks to highlight the vulnerable and act as a reminder of what we stand to lose.

Artist Bio

George Rose is not afraid of challenges. If you say she can’t do it, all she’ll do is prove to you how much she can. She is driven by the fact that she’s always outdoing what she is capable of – and in the midst of the chaos, she’s left her peers in the dust. For this reason, she is a doer and currently stands tall as one of the most prolific muralists in Australia right now.

George has spent the last several years traveling from one project to another, rarely in one city for longer than a few months completing art commissions for a diverse range of clients. She has recently worked with Brown Brothers, Instagram, and Samsung to name a few. If she’s not completing work for commercial projects, she’s on the global street art festival circuit including Bright Walls, Colour Tumby, First Coat, Perfect Match, Roskilde, Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans, Street Prints, Tropica, Wall to Wall, and Wonderwalls.
