In celebration of World Oceans Week 2025, PangeaSeed is proud to release a special limited edition fine art print as part of Printed Oceans, our educational art program.

This striking artwork honors seven visionary individuals who have dedicated their lives to ocean exploration, science, and conservation. Each figure represents one of the seven seas and reflects a powerful continuum of leadership, from the foundational voices of ocean advocacy to the rising generation of changemakers:

  • Jacques Cousteau – France (North Pacific Ocean)
  • Nainoa Thompson – Hawaiʻi (South Pacific Ocean)
  • Dr. Sylvia Earle – USA (Arctic Ocean)
  • Sir David Attenborough – UK (Southern Ocean)
  • Asha de Vos – Sri Lanka (Indian Ocean)
  • Zandile Ndhlovu – South Africa (South Atlantic Ocean)
  • Melissa Cristina Márquez – Puerto Rico (North Atlantic Ocean)

This artwork is a celebration of ocean guardians past and present who remind us that the future of our blue planet depends on the actions we take today. Through the power of art and storytelling, we invite the global community to unite in protecting the life and beauty of the seas.

The Story Behind

Guardians of the Seven Seas

Guardians of the Seven Seas is my personal tribute to the contemporary heroes who have dedicated their lives to defending our oceans. They are true pioneers, helping us navigate the mysteries of the deep while confronting the formidable challenges of pollution and climate change. Their commitment to preserving Earth’s bodies of water and their vibrant ecosystems are nothing short of heroic. Having been born on an island and holding a lifelong love for the ocean, I felt compelled to capture their spirit and pay homage to their incredible legacy.

Growing up, I collected antique ephemera, so the chance to unite their portraits with elements from old nautical maps and surveys was irresistible. Each Guardian stands as an island, yet they all emerge from the universal waters that connect us. With this vision in mind, PangeaSeed and I chose to create a central hero poster showcasing them all, alongside individual cards, celebrating their distinct and collective contributions.

About the Artist

Tracie Ching

Tracie Ching was born on the island of Oahu in the late 80s. Later moved to the mainland and raised in New Jersey, Ching was dedicated to art from a young age. She earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts in 2009 before pivoting to illustration and portraiture. Largely self-taught, she became a self-employed artist by 2011 known for her highly graphic cross-hatching style.

Ching made her home in pop-culture creating alternative movie posters for cult classics and showing in galleries such as Spoke Art in San Francisco. She has since grown her portfolio to include commercial art for Hasbro and Penguin Randomhouse, covers for TIME and Newsweek and key art for Disney, Netflix, and Marvel Studios.

Ching is also known for her political work such as the official inaugural poster for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, viral KavaNope poster and voting initiatives like Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote.

She is often engaged on social justice and welfare campaigns like PSAs for Smokey the Bear, the Equal Rights Amendment campaign and National Geographic’s Campaign for Nature.

Ching’s work has been shown in the Getty Museum and Design Museum in London and in the permanent collection of The Library of Congress and Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. She is founder and principal mentor of the biennial We Create Mentorship & Grant program.
