The Story Behind

Lost Atlantis

Atlantis is a subject that I could probably spend an endless time exploring visually. A lost civilization, sunken into the ocean has so many possibilities!

People who know my work would say it fits in quite well.

Another reason why I'm so glad PangeaSeed agreed when I suggested it for our collaboration is that I feel a bit of a personal connection to it.

When I was a kid I remember a book in the library that strongly spoke to me, it was full of generous drawings presenting the life of Atlantis before it sank. I have tried to locate this book many times as an adult but still haven’t been able to find it, I think about it often and won't give up until hopefully one day I see it again.

Then, of course, Atlantis has a strong symbolic meaning today. When sea levels start to rise due to a warmer climate, the idea of a thriving civilization swallowed by the ocean feels less like a myth. Just as Atlantis was lost to the waves, modern coastal cities could face an uncertain future not too far from its fate.

About the Artist

Kilian Eng

Kilian Eng was born in 1982 in Stockholm, Sweden. He graduated in 2010 from Konstfack, University of Arts Craft & Design in Stockholm with a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Illustration and storytelling.

Kilian's medium of choice when illustrating is digital, something he has developed and explored for many years now. Elements that he often comes back to are the importance of color and lighting in a composition where geometry, the environment, and organic shapes often are prominent. He likes to give his images a surrealistic touch and place the visuals in an alternative reality that hopefully evokes the viewer's curiosity to explore and fantasize further.

His strongest artistic influences come from many of the European artists in the genre of sci-fi and fantasy with a very open mind about what that can be. Clients include Armada Skis, Disney, Fortune Magazine, HBO, Heavy Metal, Krewella, Las Vegas Weekly, Marvel, MGM, M83, Milan Records, Miami Horror, Mondo, Red Bull, Sony Playstation, The New York Times, The Gaslamp Killer, Toyota, Waxwork Records, Warner Bros, Wired Italia, Zeit.
