The Story Behind

Memories from the Sea

As an artist, I often explore the idea of seeing more, looking deeper, beyond the surface. In this piece, the character becomes a witness, not just to the world around her, but to the quiet crisis unfolding beneath our oceans. Ocean acidification, caused by rising carbon emissions, is dissolving coral reefs, silencing marine life, and eroding the incredible biodiversity that keeps our planet in balance. I created this work, entitled "Memories From The Sea" to hold space for that awareness, because beauty should not distract us from urgency, but guide us toward action. Through art, I hope we remember what’s at stake, and find the courage to protect it.

About the Artist

Alex Garant

Alex Garant is a Canadian contemporary figurative Op artist known as the "Queen of Double Eyes." After studying visual arts at Notre-Dame De Foy College near Quebec City, she moved to Toronto following her graduation in 2001. A heart attack in 2012 became the turning point that led her to fully commit to her art practice, profoundly shifting her outlook on life and creativity.

Widely recognized as the inventor of "Analogue Glitch Art" and a pioneer of the contemporary figurative Op Art movement, Garant combines traditional oil painting techniques with bold graphic elements. Her work employs patterns, duplication, symmetry, and image superposition to create hypnotic, layered portraits. Through this distinctive visual language, she explores themes of human duality and the tension between inner identity and outward appearance.

Garant is represented by galleries in Canada, the United States, and Australia. Her work has been exhibited in major institutions including the Museum of Art and History (MOAH) in California, the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Arizona, the Honolulu Museum of Art in Hawaii, and most recently, the Medici Museum of Arts in Warren, Ohio.

Her art has been featured in notable publications such as Hi-Fructose, Juxtapoz, and Beautiful Bizarre, along with American Art Collector and digital platforms like VICE and The Huffington Post. She has collaborated on high-profile projects with MARVEL x Sideshow Collectibles, KAPPA, Universal Music x Billy Talent, and Penguin Random House. Garant is also a member of the TREKELL Artist Pro Team, highlighting her broad impact and enduring presence in the contemporary art world.
