Artist Statement

“In illustrating corals, I realized how much the forms and colors are reminiscent of the human circulatory system. It is easy to neglect taking notice of our heart's health when we are young and feeling invincible. It is only when we get older that we start to feel the effects of the things we have taken into our bodies throughout the years. We only decide to be proactive in taking better care of ourselves once it is too late. For the sake of our hearts and the oceans, the next generation is learning from past mistakes and starting to live consciously and with intention.”

Artist Bio

Louise “Ouizi” Jones (formerly Chen) was born and raised in Los Angeles to Shanghainese parents. Her enormous site-specific floral murals can be seen in public spaces throughout the United States, from museums to public parks. Her mural techniques are uniquely informed by her background in drawing and printmaking and her aesthetic style is deeply influenced by her Chinese background. Her obsession with flowers continues to grow, stemming from an early introduction to Georgia O’Keeffe and fond memories of picking figs with her grandmother. She currently lives and works in Detroit.
