The Story Behind

Synthetic Waters

In Synthetic Waters, I explore the fragile balance between nature’s resilience and the pervasive impact of human activity. Centered on the image of a killer whale, a symbol of strength and grace, the work reflects the stark reality of marine ecosystems inundated by plastic waste and microplastics. Surrounding the killer whale are vibrant, fragmented shapes that evoke both the allure and destructiveness of synthetic materials, visually mirroring their infiltration into the ocean’s depths and its profound effect on marine life.

This piece seeks to highlight the urgent need for environmental awareness and accountability. By juxtaposing the fluidity of nature with the rigid chaos of artificial debris, Synthetic Waters invites viewers to confront the consequences of unchecked consumption. It serves not only as a celebration of the ocean’s beauty and vitality but also as a call to action, challenging us to rethink our relationship with the natural world and to take meaningful steps toward its preservation.

About the Artist

Arlin Graff

Arlin is a Brazilian artist based in the United States, born in the city of Tatuí in the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil. As a child, he loved playing with wood blocks, assembling and dismantling creations in a small woodshed where his father crafted birdcages and other wooden objects.

In late 1999, as a teenager, Arlin began experimenting with graffiti, painting trains in his neighborhood. By 2007, he had graduated with a degree in industrial design. A year later, after moving to São Paulo, he combined his passion for art and design while working as an art director in various advertising agencies.

Drawing inspiration from his childhood in the woodshed, Arlin developed a unique form of deconstructionism. His distinct style brings abstract creations to life, often appearing as though they are emerging from a digital realm. Animals serve as a central theme in his work, representing a fragmented, synthetic nature shaped by the influence of modern technology.

Over time, Arlin expanded beyond street art to explore fine arts, continually refining his techniques. Today, his intricate paintings grace both canvases and large-scale murals around the world, infusing city walls with vibrant color and his signature style.
