Print Details

The Inky Depths by Kristen Liu-Wong is an ocean-inspired art print featuring velvet flocking and blacklight-reactive inks. A vivid encounter with deep-sea life, the artwork celebrates marine biodiversity and the scientists working to understand it.

A pink squid curls around a submersible as jellyfish, sharp-toothed fish, and other marine creatures fill the scene. Kristen’s bold colors and intricate storytelling turn the deep sea into a world of discovery, with something to notice in every corner.

Velvet flocking adds texture, while blacklight-reactive inks create a different viewing experience under UV light. The print can be enjoyed in ordinary light, with its blacklight effect revealed under a blacklight.

The Story Behind

The Inky Depths

For this year's image, I wanted to highlight a part of the oceans that is often forgotten and understudied and is also critically threatened- the Deep. The oceans are thought to contain roughly 2 million species, and so far we know less than 250,000. The race to fill in those gaps and discover remaining species has become urgent.

As deep-sea mining has begun to be popularized, it has also begun to threaten previously untouched habitats on the seafloor while climate change continues to warm and acidify the seas. The lack of exploration of the seafloor is another reason that deep-sea mining is so concerning- we don't know what we are potentially destroying or the long-term ramifications of its destruction. The USA has just advanced a review of the first-ever deep-sea-bed commercial mining permit- the destruction that the commercialization of deep-sea mining could bring to these vital environments is unprecedented and unknown.

My piece celebrates the biodiversity and wonders that the deep seas contain, and I thought that a velvet-flocked blacklight print would be the perfect medium to celebrate and revel in its uniqueness. I wanted to include a figure in a submersible to celebrate the scientists that care for and study these environments.

About the Artist

Kristen Liu-Wong

Born and raised in San Francisco, Kristen Liu-Wong attended Pratt Institute where she graduated with a BFA in Illustration. She has shown extensively in numerous galleries both domestically and abroad and in addition to her gallery practice, she has worked with an extensive range of clients on projects ranging from murals to editorial illustrations to clothing lines. Kristen now lives and works in Los Angeles.

Kristen’s work blends everyday occurrences from her life with abstracted nightmares and crude humor. Trained as an illustrator, she tries to tell a story with every piece she makes, developing a personal and slightly sinister narrative within each painting. Using vibrant colors, heavy patterning, and tight compositions, the work draws inspiration from a variety of sources including but not limited to American folk art, the cartoons she watched as a kid, Shunga, and her appreciation for architecture. She is always striving to make work that is highly personal but altered enough to allow individual interpretations to be applied to every story she paints.
