The Story Behind

The Last Harbor

For this project, I wanted to focus on an old shipwreck and the part it can play in supporting life under the surface. Over time, these structures can be transformed into artificial reefs that provide shelter, food, and a home for a wide variety of marine life.

As they settle on the seafloor, their surfaces become covered with algae, corals, sponges, and other organisms that form the foundation of a thriving underwater ecosystem. The many openings, decks, and compartments of a shipwreck create safe spaces where marine life can hide from predators, reproduce, and feed. In areas where natural reefs are limited, shipwrecks can provide an important refuge and help increase local biodiversity. It’s a fascinating demonstration of nature's ability to reclaim man-made structures and turn them into habitats that support life in our oceans.

In my piece, the ship depicted is inspired by the historic Swedish warship Vasa that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. I imagined it centuries later as part of a thriving underwater ecosystem. What was once a symbol of human ambition has been reclaimed by nature with a new purpose. However, the real Vasa ship was salvaged and is available for public viewing in the Vasa Museum in my hometown of Stockholm; it's quite the sight.

Kilian Eng

About the Artist

Kilian Eng

Kilian Eng was born in 1982 in Stockholm, Sweden. He graduated in 2010 from Konstfack, University of Arts Craft & Design in Stockholm with a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Illustration and storytelling.

Kilian's medium of choice when illustrating is digital, something he has developed and explored for many years now. Elements that he often comes back to are the importance of color and lighting in a composition where geometry, the environment, and organic shapes often are prominent. He likes to give his images a surrealistic touch and place the visuals in an alternative reality that hopefully evokes the viewer's curiosity to explore and fantasize further.

His strongest artistic influences come from many of the European artists in the genre of sci-fi and fantasy with a very open mind about what that can be. Clients include Armada Skis, Disney, Fortune Magazine, HBO, Heavy Metal, Krewella, Las Vegas Weekly, Marvel, MGM, M83, Milan Records, Miami Horror, Mondo, Red Bull, Sony Playstation, The New York Times, The Gaslamp Killer, Toyota, Waxwork Records, Warner Bros, Wired Italia, Zeit.
