The Story Behind

Umi No Yume

"Umi No Yume" (Dream of the Sea in Japanese) shows Mia floating through a dreamlike underwater world, surrounded by many creatures that call the ocean home. Bathed in soft aquatic blues and shimmering iridescent light, the piece feels calm and magical. With her eyes gently closed, Mia seems lost in a dream of the sea, inviting viewers into a quiet, beautiful world. For this edition, I chose holographic finishes and pearlescent paper to capture the way sunlight filters and shifts through water. The delicate, net-like patterns are the sun rays, but they also symbolize the fragile connections that hold the ocean's ecosystem together. That fragility, however, is the heart of the piece. The ocean's breathtaking beauty is also what makes it so vulnerable to us. Pollution, rising temperatures, and coral bleaching quietly threaten its marine species. Mia floats peacefully, yet she too is gently caught in the net, a quiet reminder that the ocean's future depends on how thoughtfully we choose to care for it, and my small way of standing with the ocean to make a difference.

About the Artist

Shishidomia

Shishidomia is a Japanese artist with strong Latin American roots. Her childhood swayed within the beauty and richness of the Japanese and Colombian cultures; a mixture of flavors and colors that awoke a true passion for art and its power to convey deep social and personal feelings. This effervescent drive led to her enrollment at the prestigious Tokyo Metropolitan Senior High School of Fine Arts, culminating in her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Textile Art & Design at Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan. While still in college, Shishidomia was awarded The Barbara Shapiro Award for excellence by the New Beat International textile art competition in Oaxaca, Mexico. Shortly after graduation, Shishidomia moved to the US to pursue a career as a pop art artist.
